tv   The Willis Report  FOX Business  February 11, 2013 6:00pm-7:00pm EST

6:00 pm
. melissa: i'm going to keep the terror going until thursday at least, now on a new late fee that one venture firm is charges its employees.
6:01 pm
andreessen, is charging employees for every minute they are late. should they be doing this, they work for mark andreessen they have money to burn. >> as long as they get 10 bucks for every minutes meeting runs long. melissa: i like that, look at ashley. >> what if they have a doctor appointment. melissa: they have private doctors. >> too many meetings. melissa: should we get a jolt beverage tomorrow morning and test it out. >> yes. >> and i will show up 10 minutes late. melissa: we'll see you back here tomorrow, the willis report is next. >> hello i am gerri willis, to the willis report, president obama outlines his vision for america in the state of the union address. one top democrat, nancy pelosi said, we don't have a spending problem. also my take on why the post office is in dire straits, and
6:02 pm
what should be done to fix it. and "consumer reports" find some small green car engines do not deliver on fuel economy claims, the willis report is on the ca case. gerri: all and that and more coming up later in the show, but our top story, one of our nation's heroes abandoned, new details on navy seal who shot and killed osama bin laden. "esquire" magazine and center for investigative reports released a 27 page article today with fresh details on raid, what happened to bin laden's shooter after retiring last settlement. here is troubling headline of the article, the man who killed bin laden is screwed, why? the former navy seal, who to this day remains annonymous said
6:03 pm
the military stiffed him, he is out on his own, no pension, no healthy care and no protection for his family, joining me now, the ceo of concerned veterans for america. i want to read you something fromet desire -- esquire magazine article, i know have you questions about the reporting, what is much harder to understand, is a man with more than a hundred successful war missions who capped his career by terminating bin laden has nolanding pad in civilian life, nothing, no pension, no health care, no protection for himself or his family. and this story, this long story, interviews him at length he talks about how he has no health care, no pe pension, he was in service for 16 years, admittedly he left early but now nothing.
6:04 pm
what do you make of that? >> well, i tell you, i read the whole story it is gripping and a powerful depiction of the difficulty of transition into civilian life this guy put two bullets in head of osama bin laden. now he is transitioning into civilian life and looking at the difficult -- amongst elite soldiers, navy seals their lives have been classified as secret missions, now his life would be threatened if his name is known, a whole other set of circumstances. gerri: this is the guy that president described as the best of the best? everyone in obama administration had nothing but accolades for this group of guys, here is the guy whoin manages to take down your number one enemy. and we can't take care of him? we could spend tens of millions of dollars, "zero dark thirty" so books have have been out on this raid, but this guy, we can't help him?
6:05 pm
>> you know, he is exempt larry in many ways of bloated bureaucracy that our guys face. these are big, government insteads meant to trachsoldiers coming off of the battle feel and transition them, they wait in long lines issue they don't get the care they need, they don't have enough mental health professionals, all they face when a bureaucracy consumes itself. >> here is what the president, barack obama said, here is his promise to veterans, no one who fights overseas for this country should ever have to fight for a job, not just a job he is talking bhe is talking about basics, health care, a career in service, what does he have to show for it? nothing, how would you rate the job we're doing in this country for our veterans right now? >> not good enough.
6:06 pm
because we have got over 900,000 waiting in line for their claims right now at the va, because the guy like this does not know where to turn, the v.a. provides 5 years of combat health care for a guy like this, there are ways for transition assistance but a lot of people fall through the cracks, the system is full of holes we pump more money into problem without fundamentally reforming the way that va does, have you a pencil and paper bureaucracy in many places, they do not transition smoothly. from department of defense, have you look at department of veterans affairs and say, we're going to change the way we do business, because we should be customer focused, to a guy like this who served his nation for 16 years, he could have waited to 20, but it does not change what we owe him. >> we owe him a lot, his wife said she is thinking about changing her name there say huge danger for them, right, you
6:07 pm
know, if anybody finds out who they are, they have a bolt bag in the house to run out at any time, they live in fear, with no help, i think it is, just embarrassing and it is a shame. we should do better. >> not the -- it is not the way it should be, we did a tour, called the we can do better tour, we can for veterans and we must. gerri: a bloodure having you on, -- pleasure having you oif you hear anything well, it let us know, pete. >> you got it. gerri: meanwhile, a showdown is brewing between california and texas over who state is better for business, texas governor rick perry sends out ads inviting businesses from the golden state to head down south because building a business in california is next to impossible, perry is also visiting th the golden state ths week, our next guest says he understands perry's flight.
6:08 pm
joining me now, republican assembly plan dan lowe, i have to ask you, we saw your piece, but how do you feel about rick perry coming into california, to steal your companies? >> well, it is not about rick perry. it is about why do we have the door open for every governor in the country to come to california to take businesses back to their state. colorado is opened up offices, arizona opened up offices, it is like, you know the low hanging fruit. if you want to build a business come to california, go back to nevada. gerri: you know, we're seeing people with businesses leave, we're seeing wealthy people leave, because have you that incredible income tax now. why -- what is the point of staying, this is your state, can't you defend it? >> well, we would defend it but you defend it by fixing it. the businesses and the small businesses of california that pay for the roads, the bridges, and infrastructure and law
6:09 pm
enforcement. when you have state age agent that rule with iron 50s that find businesses and hunt them instead of trying to help them, the culture in california is hostile, a survey was done 69% of businessessin california believe it is unfriendly to do business in california, they are voting with their feet, we have to stop it. gerri: you wrote some funny lining in your column, said, the case for california when it comes to thaksin shinawatra, california home of the nation's highest maxes on businesses, but we do have disneyland it is cold comfort. >> it is interesting, an old saying, you can't be for jobs and against business unless you want to move the capital to disneyland, bottom line, common sense will prevail. if you want to grow the economy, you have to allow the people of california to prosper. the best way to do that for
6:10 pm
california is get out of the way if we do -- >> dan your governor has done the opposite, all he seems to do is raise the hurdles, raising taxes, making government bigger not smaller, should you be headed in opposite direction? >> yeah the bottom line is that the biggest problem we have is we have sacramento has handed over a lot ofs this authority to state agencies who are not elected, regulatory agencies who look at businesses as atm machines instead of trying to help them, i met governor perry two years ago. businesses that left california, one testimony was said that, you know doing business in california was a date of a thousand cuts. >> wow. you mentioned that california's number one in something you wish you were not, which is poverty, you know, you look at the results of the kind of policies your state has followed for
6:11 pm
years, and years and years, people get hooked on this public money. and that is only way they know how to survive. >> we have 12% of the population of country, we have 34% of the welfare. bottom line, it is unsustainable. we need to create opportunities in california where we could grow the economy, but the last year the couple years ago there was a study that said it cost the average person in california average small business $40,000 a year to pay for regulatory impacts. gerri: wow. good lord. that is ridiculous. i really do not see why people stay in california. it is a beautiful state, but the cost of doing business is so high. and not just business, cost of living there is through the roof. appreciate your beingo sand edand talk -- candid and talking with us, thank you, dan. >> thank you. gerri: wow. iexpensive, a lot more to cam, including shockin shock commentm
6:12 pm
nancy pelosi. >> and u.s. postal service continues to hefrage money, -- hemorrhage money, i'll tell you why. all stations come over to mission a for a final go. this is for real this time. step seven point two one two. rify and lock. command is locked. five seconds. three, two, one. standing by for capture. the most innovative software on the planet... dragon is captured. is connecting toy's leading companies to places beyond it. siemens. answers.

6:15 pm
gerri: the u.s. postal service on moving to cut service on saturday is being met by shock. today, 25 members of congress' new york delegation sent a letter decrying the move, some were republicans some were democrats, truth is the smarter move in cutting service on saturday would be to cut service monday through friday, and be open saturday only, postal service is broke, no matter how much hammering there is in congress we can't afford it, if
6:16 pm
things keep up this way, we know they will come for a taxpayer bail out, in final three months of last year, the postal service lost nearly 1.1 billion, it losing 25 million-dollars each day. in truth, usps is biggest pay patronage system in the nation, their wages and benefits comprise 80% of the usps operating expenses, 4 out of 5 operating dollars goes to wages and benefits, compared to 32% for fedex, that is not a recipe for success, the u.s. postal service sun sustainable, -- is unanun.
6:17 pm
newspapers were sent by mail, they say today to provides a unravelled community for community members to getting it, today there are 32,000 post offices and 313 million americans, instead of one of serving 53,000 people as it did in start of the republic, one office serves less than 10,000 folks bloat, waste, excess are hallmarks of the post office, when i want community i don't go to the post office, i go to church, i get on the e-mail or telephone, the most profitable businesses have moved to fedex, and ups and the internet. even first palace mail service is declining down 4.5% last quarter. only thing they deliver to my house is retail catalogs, they clog my mailbox. and that is not a business i think that federal government
6:18 pm
should be in. down side the post office or close it, we can't afford to bail it out. coming up at bottom of hour, a preview of tomorrow's state of the union address with grover norquist, and top republicans to house saying sequestration scheduled for next month are going to happen, is that a good thing for america, i'll ask congressman james land ford next, right there he is, this is $100,000. we asked total strangers to watch it for us. thank you so much. i appreciate it.i'll be r. they didn't take a dime. how much in fees does your bank take to watch your money? if your bank takes more money than a stranger, you need an ally. ally bank. your money needs an ally.
6:19 pm
i work for 47 different companies. well, technically i work for one. that company, the united states postal service®, works for thousands of home businesses. because at usps.com®, you can pay, print and have your packages picked up for free. i can even drop off free boxes. i wear a lot of hats. well, technically i wear one. the u.s. postal service®, no business too small.
6:20 pm
gerri: some republicans say looming automatic tax cuts are happening in 60 seconds.
6:21 pm
6:22 pm
gerri: time is running out to avert the automatic spending cuts, but there is growing talk on capitol hill happening, with more republican congressman james langford of oklahoma, welcome back. i'm hearing that this will go through, the republicans have gotten on the same page, sequestration will happen. what happened to the naysayers? >> well, at the end of the day we have to cut spending, that is the real issue, worse way to do it is across the board, but that seems only way is that washington gets a cut, reality is government has grown 40% in last 5 years. this is a 2% cut of government off of 40% growth, while it is dram at nick some budget line -- dramatic in some budget line items but not across the board. gerri: you say it is going to happen, fred upton said the same thing, people like john mccain do not want to see it go through, how do you bring it in
6:23 pm
line. >> none of us want to see across the board cuts specific line items of bloated, and others that are close to efficient. so we would see targeted cuts, and long-term and hande mandatok out how do we get out 20 years from now and continue to save. you save for a couple years. we would rather gat it fantastic decade. gerri: talking about sequestration, here is fred upton. >> it has to happen, without an alternative in house last year with speaker boehner and canter we passed in the house two different bills with spending offsets on the sequester, the senate did not take either one of them up. we are now left in a position of this sequester that is going on testimony. gerri: it occurs it is likely to get scare tactics out of the obama administration, if
6:24 pm
republicans are onboard, warning people of all bad things that will happen. do you think that will happen? >> i do, it has already happened, first thing they will say is, they will have to close down the u.s. air force, and shut down marines, and no longer have these things, it is always the worse case scenario first, there are -- what is called accounts that are out there that money that was not spent last year that can be reduced in military this year, multiple accounts, that can be reduced, is there a better way to do this, yes, but your focus on to get to serious business, there is a huge tax increase that happened a few months ago, i remind people, 2014 is to be -- 201313 is t2013 largest amount e coming in but we're still short in budget. gerri: from my point of view we're back to revenue levels
6:25 pm
prerecession, now why you can't run our government on that, it just for the life of me i don't understand that, why can't the federal government be run on 2007 level revenues, what is the problem? >> two, one is baby boom, we have 10,000 people a day that retire. gerri: we knew it was going to happen. >> i'm amazed i came into congress two years ago it was like no one heard of the term baby boom, we watched it, it has been predictable. the second part is stimulus of 2009. there is a huge plus up in all of different accounts that has never come back down. we're spending a trillion a year more now than what we were 5 years ago our proposal, let's get our spending back down to 2008 level, and allow it to grow to inflailing. >> i have to ask you, about a spending issue, that is entitlement. today, white house press
6:26 pm
secretary jay carney, aol automaticky ruling out any provision to raise medicare, did know a person promise they would going to be on the table, don't we talk about this. this is the big nut, the thing we have to tackle. tackle -- going back 30 years ago, reagan and tip o'neill came to an agreement to increase retirement age from 65 to 67, 30 years out with a slow progression to get there we don't have 30 years, now it is close, we have 16.5 trillion. we can't wait that long. if congress planned for this 10 years ago we could have had a lead up to it people struck with fact that social security of designed when 65 of life expectancy, it was said to be an emergency incase you out lived your other retirements, we have get back to basics of safing for your retirement and having your safety net there.
6:27 pm
>> that calls into question, a lot of other issues that we'll have to talk about another time, like having an even playing fields in stock market so people can save for retirement. congressman lang ford, always good to see you, i'm sorry i blame you for all of congress' ills. >> there are a few working on it, thanks. gerri: thank you. coming up, how you may have paid for more your mortgage or auto loan than you should have. tomorrow is the president'ss3 state of the union address, is it too late? i'll ask norquist after the break.
6:28 pm
6:29 pm
6:30 pm
gerri: spending problem? what spending problem?
6:31 pm
nancy pelosi's latest claims on washington spending is sends white house into damage control mode, with more, grover norquist, always great to have you here, let's talk about nancy pelosi for a second, let's listen. >> the fact is we have plenty of spending cuts 1.6 trillion in budget control act, what we need it growth, almost a false argument to say we have a spinning problem we have a budget deficit problem we have to address. gerri: what is he thinking? >> she likes the level of high spending, she doesn't think that additional trillion in spending is a problem. the problem in her view is that peasants are not sends enough money into washington d.c., she does not think it is a problem, those of us who pay taxes think
6:32 pm
it is. gerri: she also talked about closing loopholes in particular oil companies, this dream that has emerged that somehow oil companies will fund this country going forward. >> they are talking about getting rid of expensing like all other companies targeting a particular industry, not a special deal that oil companies have. the other challenge is, even if you get rid of real existing deducts and credits, that perhaps should be there or should not. if you get rid of those and them, and spend the money, then you never get to do tax reform. we need is the deducts and credits to be scaled back while rates come down urge revenue neutral tax reform. gerri: well, when is that going to happen? >> a different president, and different senate. gerri: that will take a long time, president could double down on some of his talk about raising taxes, you expect to hear that in the state of the union? >> i think he will, because that
6:33 pm
is all he talks about, he spent 5 years in the white house, all he talks about is raising taxes, he never reduces spending, he has no real proposals or votes to reduce entitlements or reform them, i think when he went to grade school they did addition, and he was not there on the day they did subtraction. he does not do subtraction. gerri: we'll have fun with this one, president talking about above iting, changes -- above on theeinpivoting, from "usa today" obama puts renewed focus job creation in 2009. obama pivots to job creation january 28, 2010, in san francisco cosanfrancisco chroni. and in reuters february 24, 2012, obama to focus on jobs and
6:34 pm
the deficit, washington post, february 10, 200013, obama to pivot back to the economy. >> the president came in, he spent almost a trillion dollars on stimulus spending he would that would -- he thought that would create jobs, if you somehow took a colo dollar from someone and give it to someone else you would have two dollars in the economy, it does not work, president keeps talking about going back to jobs, he means back to additional stimulus spending. gerri: if we translated to obama speak it would be more federal spending, unemployment rate under president obama, higher than when we came into office, we had no traction, despite the jobs council, that done work, despite all stimulus spending,
6:35 pm
what is it going to take? it is a matter of confidence? is something else going on. >> all of the recession reaction that obama and his administration spent 4 years drafting, one they look at them said, it would be better if we didn't shows these to american people until after the elect, we have 4 years of those expensive job killing regulations coming out, i am glad someone looked at it, it happened last year, this stuff they said, if american people saw it, they would hate it. it realize it was a job-killing regulation that is what unrolls over next 4 years. >> a lot coming, obamacare, environment. >> the unpleasant parts of obamacare. the goodies they did up front, the stuff that will make you wait longer in line to get health care, make you wait longer in line, to go to your own doctor, or to emergency room, and all of our rates are insurance rates are going to go up,. gerri: you won't get the doctor
6:36 pm
that you want or a doctor at all, grover thank you for coming in, great to see you on set, thank you. >> good to be with you. gerri: the speaks are not just about laying out a president's agenda before congress, and american team, it is about politics made more unifour -- infuriating ridiculous standing ovations that go on and on. one of those things that bothered kate hutcheson on her time in capitol hill. >> one of the best i thinks is not sitting in that room, and either standing up and collapse every 15 seconds or sitting on your hand for the while thing, i wish so much we would have a moratorium on standing and let everyone listen like the people outside of the country are, i think it would be so much better. gerri: we want to know what you think, your question, should standing ovations be banned at
6:37 pm
state of the union, log on to gerri willis do thjerry will.coy should, applause breaks certainly make the addresses last longer, so do long wined commanders in chief, the longest televised state of union speeches, number 5 is gerald ford, his speeches were 45 minutes long, his longest was 1976, 50 minutes long, and number, 4 george w. bush. and lovely music, number 3, lindlinden johnson, he talked to congress for more than an hour and 11 minutes and number 2, president obama, you remember him. averages an hour and 5 minutes for state of the union. we'll see if he is true to

to their reporting, and this reports is critical to consumers, it determines what you pay for a loan for a mortgage, we'll have to pay if you go out and borrow money for any reason, sometimes whether you get a job, whether is it going to come down to brass tax, and instead of another surprising report from the federal tread commission, someone will make a change. >> this is what people should do, a two prong approach, first we have write your congressman and your senator, complaint, and express your voice, say you need to force the individuals to change, second you have to go to print out you'r your free credit report, then you looka turf, and say let me figure out how i can make my own case. get these removed, once they get then send a litter of dispute, assert tied let ter of dispute,

6:52 pm
displace am turbo chargedment in that promise power of a bigger engine the fuel economy of a smaller engine. gerri: what did you find? does it work? >> well we've been finding is several of the cars actually don't deliver better fuel economy despite the claim. at least in "consumer reports." instead we're seeing is there are a number of competitors that offer traditional engines that offer better fuel economy. >> i see that people are paying as much as $300 extra or turbo charged engines should they just avoid them? >> consumers should take time to do their own research rather than rely on word of mouth or marketing. there are a few such engines that do a little bit better, but, for most part, there are several cars and every category that offer exception at gas mileage, and far better than
6:53 pm
whatever is being traded in. gerri: i want to start with losers, the worst offenders, you say they are ford fusions. >> we're surprised. the ford fusion with 1.6-liter engine, a small engine, we found that fuel economy did not live up to the epa claim of 28-miles a gallon, and our test it got 25, which is easily bested by new rival, the honda accord. which gets 30-miles a gallon our test. gerri: ford is disputing you, saying you are all wet, not true, but, at the end of the day, people are making purchases, they are doing something good in theer markets but there is no payoff for, that how do you respond to what ford is saying. >> we know results they vary, we're finding in ourtivity, we think they more simulate what people will experience in real world, key to make sure purchase decision with all information
